Why Can’t you remember GOD just like that?

Why do people chant God’s name? Why do people have to invoke God by singing loudly in praise of Him? Why do people beat drums, dance in front of idol of God to invoke Him? Can’t people just remember God in their mind Lovingly? Just tell me, do you need to chant your mother’s name to remember her? You, just out of your love, remember her & her picture comes to your mind. Similarly do you need to singing loudly, beat drums or dance in front of your mother’s picture so that you can remember her??? You just think of her & she spontaneously comes to your mind. Then why do we need to do all this to remember God??? If we have Love for God then we can just remember Him & God’s picture shall come to your mind.

Our mind shall find joy in the things of the God only when we shall have some devotion towards the God. God is sitting in our heart & the pure soul joy is there within each of us. If our mind shall turn inwards & see the God sitting in our heart, then only we shall get the eternal pure joy & peace which is much better than the joy of the senses of the outside world.

Now human mind is so stubborn that it shall not turn easily inwards as it is accustomed to the things of the outer world. Our mind always hankers in our daily affairs, in our family & in the things of this world & has no place for the God in our day to day life. It is only due to the stubborn nature of the mind that it refuses to move towards the God, if it is finding joy in the outside world. In fact "Mind" is very powerful one & to control it, is just like keeping in control a raging bull. It just wanders like the wind, here & there & it takes enough of self discipline & practice of meditation to control it. In Bhagwat Gita, nature of mind is beautifully described which is there in below verses:

As per "Arjuna" to "Lord Sri Krishna" in Bhagwat Gita Chapter Six verse 34:

"chanchalam hi manah krishna
pramathi balavad drdham
tasyaham nigraham manye
vayor iva su-duskaram" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Six verse 34)

"Arjuna said: For the mind is restless, turbulent, obstinate and very strong, O Krishna, and to subdue it, to control it, I think, is more difficult than controlling the wind."

"sri-bhagavan uvacha
asamsayam maha-baho
mano durnigraham chalam
abhyasena tu kaunteya
vairagyena cha grhyate" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Six verse 35)

"Lord Sri Krishna said: O mighty-armed Arjuna, it is undoubtedly that mind is very difficult to curb & is restless, but it is possible by suitable practices of meditation and by detachment to control it."

So, if we want to have some devotion in God & want "Peace of Mind", then we need to change the direction of our "Mind", from this world to the God sitting in our heart. Unless our "Mind" stops wandering in this world, it shall not find peace. Our Soul is the centre in our heart & only when our "Mind" turns toward that centre, it shall not find peace. Our "Mind" shall not find peace & joy, if it moves away from the "Soul center" in our heart & moves in the outside world. So if you want to find the joy, bliss & peace in your life, just turn your mind inwards towards the God, who is sitting in your heart invisibly. It is the promise of the God in Bhagwat Gita that He shall welcome anyone who shall come to Him & He shall always protect that person. So let's change the direction of our mind from the outside world to the God. As per the below verse, if we shall do so, then we shall reach the God & shall enjoy the Bliss, Peace, Joy & Eternal Love with Him.

God, Lord Sri Krishna says to Arjuna in Bhagwat Gita:

"Be aware of me always, adore me, make every act an offering to me, and you shall come to me; this I (Krishna) promise to you, for you are dear to me". (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eighteen verse 65)

"Whosoever, always & constantly remembers Me with undivided mind; by that person, I am easy to obtain, O Arjuna, because of his constant engagement in the devotional service to Me".  (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eight verse 14)

So let's have devotion towards the God. Let's remember God for some time in our daily life so that we can too generate some "Spiritual Emotion" toward the God. Once that is developed, we shall always find God near us & our life shall be filled with joy, love & ecstasy. So the Devotion to God is the supreme. It removes all the sins of a devotee & removes all the ignorance from one's life.

Prayer is the key to God's Heart

All the religions of the world believe in one God. We all pray to God with different types of prayers. Prayer is basically an act of addressing the God for the purpose of worship. Prayer is a way of having a personal experience and intimate connection with our loving God, through which He listens silently to what we have in our mind.

In Hinduism there is a simple prayer in the form of Vedic hymn which is called "Gayatri Mantra". This Gayatri Mantra is a highly revered mantra in Hindu Religion. It is a sacred Hindu chant. It is widely used in meditation & listening to this chant brings peace of mind. As per Bhagwat Gita God is present in the form of WORD as "Gayatri Mantra". It consists of the prefix: oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ ॐ भूर्भुवस्वः, a mantra taken from the Yajurveda, and the verse 3.62.10 of the Rigveda. The Gayatri mantra is found in all the four Vedas in Hindu religion. The God invoked in this mantra is Savitr, and hence the mantra is also called Sāvitrī Mantra.

In Devanagari Lipi, it is:

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः ।
तत् सवितुर्वरेण्यं ।
भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि ।
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥

AUM BHOOR BHUWAH SWAHA,
TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM
BHARGO DEVASAYA DHEEMAHI
DHIYO YO NAHA PRACHODAYAT.

Brief about the Gayatri Mantra:

Gayatri Mantra is the foremost mantra in Hindu religion and Hindu beliefs & it inspires wisdom. Its meaning is that "May the Almighty God illuminate our intellect to lead us along the righteous path". The mantra is also a prayer to the "giver of light and life" - the sun.

Oh God! Thou art the Giver of Life,
Remover of pain and sorrow,
The Bestower of happiness,
Oh! Creator of the Universe,
May we receive thy supreme sin-destroying light,
May Thou guide our intellect in the right direction.

How to worship Gayatri Mantra:

The mother Gayatri lives in the Gayatri loka which is a planet like our earth though not visible through any scientific instruments available to date on our earth.Then how can we reach towards our divine mother? Our ancient saint, rishi vishvamitra found a simple method to reach towards our divine mother and get her blessings through Gayatri Mantra.The mantra asks wisdom from mother which is a necessity in today's stress full life. So just chant this Mantra & God shall bless you.

In Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Ten verse 35, Lord Krishna himself declares that he himself is there present if someone chants Gayatri Mantra as it is the king of all the Mantras & God himself resides in this mantra.

"brihat-sama tatha samnam
gayatri chandasam aham
masanam marga-sirso ’ham
rtunam kusumakarah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Ten verse 35)

"Sri Krishna said: Of the hymns in the Sama Veda I am the Brihat-sama, and of all the mantras, I am the Gayatri Mantra. Of months I am Margasirsa [November-December], and of seasons I am flower-bearing spring."

So let's daily do the worship of God by chanting this Gayatri Mantra. By chanting this "Divine Vedic Mantra" we shall get peace of mind. Just like a Pitcher (earthen pot for storing water) needs to submerge in Water to get it Filled so we need to surrender our ego in the Divine feet of God so that He can fill our life with bliss.

Let's understand that Soul living in everyone's body is immortal & never dies, it changes one body to other. So we should not grieve for anyone. We meet & get separated in this life as per the Karmas done together in earlier births.

Pitcher Needs to Submerge in Water to get it Filled

A Saint was telling a symbolic story:

Once a Pitcher (earthen pot for storing water) was lying beside a river. Pitcher was made of clay earth which was baked in fire, so it had become hard like a stone. Pitcher thought that it is so hard & strong but water is soft, so water should come & get filled in it. So much time went by but water never came & got filled up on it’s own in the pitcher. River was so vast that it flowed with it’s own grace all the time. In the end, a saint came, took the earthen pot, got it fully dipped in water & took it back. Lo! water got filled up in the pitcher & water too came in control of the pitcher. So the saint told to the pitcher that by giving up its ego completely by bending before the river only, you can get water filled inside yourself.

Similarly, by surrendering our ego in the Divine feet of the Lord Krishna we can get to know of Him. If we shall sit beside the river (not come towards God) then we shall not be able to know Him. By devotion of God, He too shall come in control of yourself.

Under the influence of ego human beings forget the truth about God & thinks his/her identity to be different than others. Once a person knows this knowledge of God, then the delusion of "Maya" disappears & that person shed his / her ego to become one with God again. As a rope that is burnt retains its shape intact, but has become all ashes, so that nothing can be bound with it; similarly, the person who feels one with everyone & is devoted to God, retains only the form of his egoism, but not has any idea of vanity (Ahamkâra).

Below is a verse of Bhagwat Gita which tells how an egoistic person behaves:

"ahankaram balam darpam
kamam krodham cha samsritah
mam atma-para-dehesu
pradvisanto ’bhyasuyakah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Sixteen verse 18)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, Bewildered by false ego, strength, pride, lust and anger, these egoistic people become envious of the Supreme Lord, who is situated in their own bodies and in the bodies of others, and blaspheme against the real religion."

Alexander the Great (Sikandar) Died Empty Handed

Alexander the Great (Sikandar) was a king of Macedon, a state in northern ancient Greece. Alexander succeeded his father, Philip II of Macedon, to the throne in 336 BC. By the age of thirty, he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world . He was undefeated in battle and is considered one of history's most successful commanders. Seeking to reach the "ends of the world and the Great Outer Sea", he invaded India in 326 BC, but was eventually forced to turn back at the demand of his troops. Alexander died in Babylon in 323 BC.

Alexander lived just for 33 years but he created one of the biggest empires ever on earth. He had lots of wealth which included, Gold, Pearls, Diamonds etc. in abundance. But at his death he asked his advisers and officers to keep both of his hands open during his funnel procession. Why he asked his people to do so? Actually Alexander Just wanted to tell and teach others that in this world every one comes with empty hands and goes also empty handed. Alexander the Great might have conquered many kingdoms but while leaving this world nothing was with him, every thing was left behind. So he taught to the world that when every thing has to be left here only then why to give troubles to others, why to gather so much wealth & all these worldly comforts.

As per Bhagwat Gita, whatever belongs to you today, belonged to someone else earlier and shall belong to some one else in future. Change is the law of the universe. We have not brought anything at the time of birth. Everyone came in this world empty handed and shall go the same way. Everything belongs to God only. We are mistakenly enjoying the thought that this is ours. It is this false happiness that is the cause of our sorrows.

On this earth no one is immortal & has ever stayed permanently on this earth. Our Life is not permanent on this earth & it is for a limited period of time after which it shall pass away. So we all should know the real purpose of life & should not let God slip out of our mind & life anytime, as He only shall save us during this life & also after this life.

"jatasya hi dhruvo mrityur
dhruvam janma mrtasya cha
tasmad apariharye ’rthe
na tvam socitum arhasi" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Two verse 27)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna: One who has taken his birth is sure to die, and after death one is sure to take birth again. Therefore, in the unavoidable discharge of your duty, you should not lament."

So knowing the truth about life & death, we should worship the God at all times. Lord Krishna promises in Bhagwat Gita that he shall protect His devotees in this life & in after life also. So let’s all be devotees of Lord Krishna.

Our Present Life is The Result of Our Deeds in Past Lives

At the end of Kurukshetra War, when Bhishma was lying down pierced by thousand arrows of Arjuna, then Pandavas asked Bhishma to give them knowledge of life & past life. Pandavas said:

“O Great Bhishma! Some people in this life earn money without any effort and some people do not get a single pie inspite of their strenuous efforts. Some people, inspite of having lots of money, are not inclined to enjoy the life. Some people, without learning anything from any Guru, acquire more knowledge and intelligence. Some people, inspite of serving many gurus, learn nothing in life. Some people, inspite of suffering with number of diseases and receiving death blows with lethal weapons, do not meet their death. But some people, even though they are strong and mighty, meet their death by receiving a smallest blow from a small piece of stick. What is the reason for all these adversities & why it happen like that?

At this Bhishma siad:

“O Pandavas! the only answer for all the above questions is the result of their deeds in past life. Without sowing seeds, plants never sprout. Similarly, good or bad deeds done in past life give good and bad results in the present life. By making charities in past life, one gets enormous wealth in present life without any effort. Tapas made in past life yields pleasures in present life. Service done to elders and gurus in past life results in acquiring knowledge and intelligence without studying under any guru. If one observes non violence in past life then that person lives for long age in present life. Therefore, Sadhu / Saintly people always observe nonviolence, make charities, regard gurus, serve elders and guests etc. Then only they enjoy pleasures in next life. So it’s all about doing Good or Bad Karmas in past life that one get a good or bad result in present life."

In Hindu scriptures Karma is related to the origin of one's own body. Karmas of earlier birth become the basis of this birth & Karmas of this birth become the basis of your next birth & so on. At death, soul of a person takes the stock of all Karmas (having its reservoir in that person's mind) & Divinity or God as per the divine law takes a handful of those Karmas & a new body is made with the seeds of these Karmas. So if a person has done good Karmas he/she gets a good godly body in heavens & if he/she has done bad karmas in this life then that person's soul goes to lower wombs of birds & animals. So it is generally said that we should do good Karmas only.

Below are few verses of Bhagwat Gita which explain about how a soul travels from one body to the other & where it goes as per the Karmic law:

"sariram yad avapnoti
yac chapy utkramatishvarah
grhitvaitani samyati
vayur gandhan ivasayat" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Fifteen verse 8)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, As the wind carries away odours from their seat, even so the Jivatma (soul), the lord of the body, snatching these (the mind & the senses) from the body, which it casts off, migrates into the body, which it acquires.

"yada sattve pravrddhe tu
pralayam yati deha-bhrt
tadottama-vidam lokan
amalan pratipadyate" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Fourteen verse 14)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, When one dies in the mode of goodness, he attains to the pure higher planets of the great sages."

"rajasi pralayam gatva
karma-sangisu jayate
tatha pralinas tamasi
mudha-yonisu jayate" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Fourteen verse 15)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, When one dies in the mode of passion, he takes birth among those engaged in fruit producing activities (i.e. as a man or woman on earth); and when one dies in the mode of ignorance, he takes birth in the bird & animal kingdom."

As per the Hindu Philosophy, any "Karma" done by a person, remains with that person, unless he/she has enjoyed the consequential Fruit arisen out of doing that Karma. For a good act done by him, he shall bear good result & enjoy it. Similarly for a bad act done by him, he shall bear bad result & shall have to bear punishment for it. So ,whatever, action/karma we perform with our body, mind or even speech, it should not do harm to others but should be of some use only to others. By doing good Karmas only we shall get good life in future births & shall finally meet the God.

O God, You Alone Know Yourself

Once a debate started among spiritual scholars of Banaras about the God. Every scholar wanted to prove that he knew the God best. Vedantist tried to prove it through Vedas, while others tried to prove it through other Puranas & other spiritual scriptures. Somehow everyone knew only of the some aspects of the God & tried to explain that in his own way. However God is Infinite, Omnipotent & Omnipresent. Nobody can know that Infinite God in totality. Only God himself can know himself fully. In Ramayana, it is said that, “Hari Anant, Hari Katha Ananta”, which means that “God is Infinite & His Stories are Infinite.”

Below verse of Bhagwat Gita also says that:

"svayam evatmanatmanam
vettha tvam purushottama
bhuta-bhavana bhutesa
deva-deva jagat-pate" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Ten verse 15)

"Arjuna said to Lord Krishna: Indeed, You alone know Yourself by Your own internal potency, O Supreme human being, origin of all, Lord of all beings, God of gods, Lord of the universe!"

As per Bhagwat Gita, Supreme God Lord Krishna can be known by His devotees only. Those people who hate the Lord & are of demonic nature, do not know Him. Only those devotees who know Lord Krishna as Purusottama can know about Him who is the creator of all living entities. He is also the supreme controller of everyone & all these universes. He is the origin of all other demigods, so to worship some demigod is indirectly worshiping that Supreme Lord only, though not correctly as we can worship Him directly also. That Supreme Lord is also worshipped by all the demigods so we should directly worship that Lord.

Bend Your Ego

“Once there was a very egoistic person. He never used to bend before anybody. He was an atheist & did not believe in God. He used to think that he was the most powerful person & never used to bend his head before anybody, neither before elderly people, neither before saints nor God.

One day he was travelling beside a beautiful, clean river that he felt thirsty. There was a saint who was also moving beside that egoistic person. He asked the saint that he is feeling thirsty & how he can get some water. The saint told him that he is moving beside the beautiful clean river & he can drink as much amount of water, as he can. On this, that egoistic person said, “If I need to drink the water of the river then I shall need to bend down before the river but he never bends before anyone, so how can he bend now before the river.” At this the saint replied that in that case he shall need to go thirsty only.”

To be egoistic is not good. Ego is self destructing. Ravana, Kansa & other such persons were killed due to their egoistic nature only. Ego keeps us away from the great God who is the reality in nature, who can give us the right intellect to understand the mysteries of this universe & can give us the Bliss of the soul.

To be at peace with yourself & be happy at all the times, you need to surrender your ego to the God completely. We need to take complete refuge in God by surrendering our ego at the feet of God. By complete surrender to God we do get freedom from all our sins and sorrows. In God there is no sin or sorrow. God is like the Sun in which darkness cannot exist. God is complete Joy, complete Bliss. When we are surrendering our ego to God, then we are surrendering ourselves to Joy & Bliss.

Whenever our ego separates ourselves from God, we become sad & unhappy & all tensions of life surround us. In any case we should not be egoistic, as to be egoistic is to show our separate existence from God, separate existence from Joy & Bliss. When the subtle veil of ego is torn between you & God then you are full of Joy & happiness. Just think yourself to be an instrument of God & devote fully to God.

So let's surrender our ego in the Divine feet of the God & adore Him only so that He can give us a blissful life.

In Bhagwat Gita also God says that:

"tam eva saranam gaccha
sarva-bhavena bharata
tat-prasadat param shantim
sthanam prapsyasi sasvatam" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eighteen verse 62)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, surrender unto God fully. By His grace you will attain transcendental peace and the supreme and eternal abode."

God Is Actually Ruling This Universe

Every morning Sun emerges from the eastern horizon & dispels the darkness of night. With the help of light of the Sun whole world gets lit up & all creatures are able to sustain themselves. Sun is the source of energy to this world & it's energy nurtures our earth just like a mother feeds her children. Now just imagine if Sun stops rising in the morning. In such a case all the creatures including us shall come to perish for the want of sunlight & it's energy.

Now who has created this Sun & who in this Universe is ensuring that it rises daily from the east to sustain all creatures? Certainly no human being has done this. Sun was created by the Supreme Power called God & only He is ensuring that it rises daily from the east & that all creation is maintained.

In fact a Supernatural Power exists in this universe which has created us & all other universal forms. He is having supernatural powers, who is omniscient (knows everything), who is omnipresent (who is present everywhere), omnipotent (who is having all the powers & is all powerful), who is Infinite in size, knowledge & powers, one who is imperishable & indestructible. Faith of humans in such a big & great entity having all the powers is known as God.

In Bhagwat Gita Chapter Ten, Lord Krishna is saying that he is the source of all beings & gods. Not even that as per Lord Krishna, all these universes & creations spring from but a spark of His splendor only.

This whole world has it's existence in that Universal Soul (God) only. God is like the ocean & you are like a wave of that ocean. We all are waves of the same Ocean. There is no higher or lower wave. As the waves and the ocean are one, so are you, part & parcel of God only. One's ego only separates one from the God. Just lose your ego & dive yourself in the ocean of Universal Soul.

When a fire is burning, many sparks come out it. Similarly, all these souls have come out from that Universal Soul. "Mundaka Upanisad" explains that only:

"tat etat satyam yatha su-diptat pavakad
visphulingah sahasrasah prabhavante
sa-rupah tathaksharad vividhah saumya
bhavah prajayante tatra caivapi yanti"

The Supreme God is real and eternal. As many thousands of sparks come from a blazing fire, so many different living entities are manifested from the imperishable Supreme God and then again go & merge into Him.

In Bhagwat Gita also God says that this whole world & it's people are nothing else but part & parcel of Him only. Just like clusters of Yarn-Beads are woven on a thread, so is this whole world threaded in Him. So You are nothing but a "Spark of the Divine".

"mattah parataram nanyat
kincid asti dhananjaya
mayi sarvam idam protam
sutre mani-gana iva" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Seven verse 7)

"Sri Krishna said:

There is nothing else besides Me,
Like clusters of Yarn-Beads,
Formed by knots on a thread,
All this world is threaded on Me (universal soul)."

So let's worship that Supreme Power who is ruling this Universe, someone who is all powerful, Infinite in size. One who is all knowledge, one who is imperishable & indestructible.

When Greatest Sinners became Saints

In scriptures, there are many stories, when robbers and murderers were converted to monkhood and to sainthood. Below are two stories in brief of persons, who were great robbers but were converted to saints by the divine people.

Story of Rishi Balmiki :

In ancient times in India, there was a robber named Ratnakar who lived in the forests. He was a cruel hunter and a robber who did all the heinous Karmas in life. Everyone in the forest, from birds to animals to humans was afraid of him. One day, he was looking for a victim in the forest, when he came into contact with great sage Narada, who was chanting the names of God. Ratnakar wanted to rob him but sage Narada advised him to stop stealing and killing the creatures as it was a very sinful act. He advised Ratnakar to start meditating & chanting the names of Lord Rama. Somehow he could not chant the name of Rama so he advised him to chant “Mara, Mara”, which he chanted but it responded in a reverse sequence like Rama, Rama only. Through reciting the names of Lord Rama he became a great saint who wrote the great epic ‘Ramayana’.

Story of Angulimala :

Similarly in the times of Lord Buddha, there was a deadly robber named Angulimala. He was so cruel that after looting people, he used to cut the fingers of people & take it with him. Once that robber and murderer came into contact with Lord Buddha & got converted to monkhood and later to sainthood. Lord Buddha did not judge Angulimala from his appearances and his external behavior. but saw the potential to reform him & make him a saint & did so by his divine capacity.

In Bhagwat Gita also, God assures his disciple Arjuna in many ways & asks him to take refuge in Him & says that He shall emancipate him of sin in all the ways, shall rescue him in his life always. Many times we think that we have done many sins in life & how God shall accept us, but God makes it very clear in Bhagwat Gita that once a person becomes devoted to Him, He does not consider that person a sinner, rather God considers that person to be a Saint as he has taken the right decision in his life to become devoted to God.

Api chet su-duracharo
bhajate maam ananya-bhak
sadhurev sa mantavya
samyag vyvasito hi sah' (Gita: Chapter IX verse 30)

'Even if the vilest sinner worships Me with full devotion, he should be considered a noble soul or saint; as he has taken the right step by worshipping me.'

'kshipram bhavti dharmatma
shasvac-chantim nigachati
kauntey pratijanihi
na me bhaktah pranashyati' (Gita: Chapter IX verse 31)

'He speedily becomes virtuous and secures lasting peace. O son of Kunti, know it for certain that My devotee never falls.'

Through above verse 31, God is telling Arjuna that such a sinful person after becoming His devotee becomes a person of good virtues and always remains in peace & such a peace is not temporary but is ever lasting. God is assuring the son of Kunti (another name of Arjuna, his disciple) that his devotee never falls again in life as He always protects him. So let's all worship the God always so that He can protect us always.

Good & Bad people as per Bhagwat Gita

How does "Bhagwat Gita" distinguishes between good & bad people? Lord Krishna describes in detail in “Chapter Sixteen“ of "Bhagwat Gita" about the qualities of good & bad people.

As per Lord Krishna, people of good nature are of transcendental qualities; belong to godly men & are endowed with divine nature. Below verses of "Bhagwat Gita" explain about the nature of good & bad people.

"sri-bhagavan uvacha
abhayam sattva-samsuddhir
jnana-yoga-vyavasthitih
danam damas cha yajnas cha
svadhyayas tapa arjavam"

"ahimsa satyam akrodhas
tyagah shantir apaisunam
daya bhutesv aloluptvam
mardavam hrir achapalam"

"tejah ksama dhrtih shaucham
adroho nati-manita
bhavanti sampadam daivim
abhijatasya bharata" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Sixteen verse 1-2-3)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, Fearlessness; purification of one’s existence; cultivation of spiritual knowledge; charity; self-control; performance of sacrifice; study of the Vedas; austerity; simplicity; nonviolence; truthfulness; freedom from anger; renunciation; tranquility; aversion to faultfinding; compassion for all living entities; freedom from covetousness; gentleness; modesty; steady determination; vigor; forgiveness; fortitude; cleanliness; and freedom from envy and from the passion for honor—these transcendental qualities, belong to godly men endowed with divine nature."

As per Lord Krishna people of demoniac nature are born in this world to cause pain to others & are the cause of destruction of this world. Just go through below verses to know about the qualities of the people of demoniac / bad nature & reflect, whether there are any such qualities present in yourself. If you find any such qualities in you, just try to weed these out of your nature, as otherwise, these shall lead to your fall only, morally & spiritually.

"dvau bhuta-sargau loke ’smin
daiva asura eva cha
daivo vistarasah prokta
asuram partha me shrinu" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Sixteen verse 6)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, in this world there are two kinds of created beings. One is called the divine and the other demoniac. I have already explained to you at length the divine qualities. Now hear from Me of the demoniac."

"dambho darpo ’bhimanas cha
krodhah parusyam eva cha
ajnanam chabhijatasya
partha sampadam asurim" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Sixteen verse 4)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, Pride, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness and ignorance—these qualities belong to those of demoniac nature."

"pravrttim cha nivrttim cha
jana na vidur asurah
na shaucham napi chacharo
na satyam tesu vidyate" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Sixteen verse 7)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, Those who are demoniac do not know what is to be done and what is not to be done. Neither cleanliness nor proper behavior nor truth is found in them."

"asatyam apratishtham te
jagad ahur anishvaram
aparaspara-sambhutam
kim anyat kama-haitukam" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Sixteen verse 8)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, They say that this world is unreal, with no foundation, no God in control. They say it is produced of sex desire and has no cause other than lust."

"etam drstim avastabhya
nastatmano ’lpa-buddhayah
prabhavanty ugra-karmanah
ksayaya jagato ’hitah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Sixteen verse 9)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, Following such conclusions, the demoniac, who are lost to themselves and who have no intelligence, engage in unbeneficial, horrible works meant to destroy the world."

dambha-mana-madanvitah
mohad grhitvasad-grahan
pravartante ’suci-vratah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Sixteen verse 10)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, Taking shelter of insatiable lust and absorbed in the conceit of pride and false prestige, the demoniac, thus disillusioned , are always sworn to unclean work, attracted by the impermanent."

"cintam aparimeyam cha
pralayantam upasritah
kamopabhoga-parama
etavad iti niscitah"

"asa-pasa-satair baddhah
kama-krodha-parayanah
ihante kama-bhogartham
anyayenartha-sanchayan" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Sixteen verse 11-12)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, They believe that to gratify the senses is the prime necessity of human civilization. Thus until the end of life their anxiety is immeasurable. Bound by a network of hundreds of thousands of desires and absorbed in lust and anger, they secure money by illegal means for sense gratification."

"daivi sampad vimokshaya
nibandhayasuri mata
ma suchah sampadam daivim
abhijato ’si pandava" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Sixteen verse 5)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, The transcendental qualities are conducive to liberation, whereas the demoniac qualities make for bondage. Do not worry Arjuna, for you are born with the divine qualities."

So above are defined the good & demoniacal qualities of good & bad people as defined in the "Bhagwat Gita". So we should follow only the good qualities in this world & we should abstain from all such bad qualities as defined above.

How Deep Is Sea?

Once, some people got together near a sea to measure its depth. One person had a 1 meter ruler so he put that in the sea & said that sea is 1 meter deep. Another person had a 2 meter ruler so he put that in the sea & said that it is 2 meter deep. Another person had a 5 meter ruler so he put that in the sea & said that it is 5 meter deep. It is as per one’s understanding & means that one describes about the depth of Sea but no one can really tell how deep the Sea is!!

Same is case with God. No one knows how big, how powerful He is. Vedas, Puranas only tell & describe Him as per the knowledge these have but still no one can describe God in full, as He is beyond the knowledge of everyone. God is Infinite & incomprehensible.

God as infinite is limitless, Omnipresent & the one who fills this limitless space. Such an Infinite God exists everywhere & is not limited by time or space. In all the religions of the world God is designated as a singular, universal Supreme Being who encompasses all this creation. His all the attributes such as power, wisdom, love, compassion etc. are limitless & hence Infinite.

Bhagwat Gita describes the God as unborn, eternal, ever-existing, infinite and primeval. God is never born nor dies at any time. God is manifest & un-manifest both i.e. He is there before the creation & also present during the creation. He is omniscient (knows everything), omnipresent (who is present everywhere), omnipotent (who is having all the powers & is all powerful), imperishable & indestructible. He is invisible, inconceivable and immutable. He is having supernatural powers. He is Truth Absolute, Knowledge Absolute and is Infinite. He is everlasting; present everywhere, unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same. So are some of the qualities of God described.

Here below are few verses from Bhagwat Gita which describe about the infinite nature of God:

"sarvatah pani-padam tat
sarvato ’ksi-siro-mukham
sarvatah shrutimal loke
sarvam avrtya tishthati" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Thirteen verse 14)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, Everywhere are His (God's) hands and feet, His eyes, heads and faces, and He has ears everywhere. In this way the Super Soul exists, pervading everything in this world."

sutre mani-gana iva" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Seven verse 7)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, there is nothing else besides Me in this world. Like clusters of yarn-beads formed by knots on a thread, all this world is threaded on me.

So let's pay our obeisance to such an Infinite God. Let's also think that God is always near to us & is always in our heart. Then He too shall never give you up or never depart. God is always with you & shall always be with you if you think Him to be supreme. So always have trust in your life that God is near you though He is present in all the creation.

Do all of Your Actions for God only

In Bhagwat Gita many times some verses come that we should have Love & have Devotion to God & that we should devote our mind to God. But there also comes many verses that we should devote all our Actions to God. Now how can we devote all of our actions to God?

This whole world is the creation of God only & knowingly, unknowingly, we all are working for the maintenance of this world only. Just introspect & see that, whatever, work or job (good one), you are doing in this world, it is helping in some way or the other in maintaining & sustaining this world. Just take it in that sense, that if all the people of the earth stop doing their daily work, duties, this whole world shall come to a standstill. In that case nobody shall grow food, vegetables, fruits & other things which sustain our life & hence we shall all die. Same is the case with other professions & each person is adding value to this world by doing his/her duty.

Now, though we do duty to sustain this world only but we don't realize that. As this world is a creation of God, so we should work for Him only. If we develop this sense that we are working selflessly to sustain this world created by God only, then also we shall develop an affinity towards God.

Below are few verses from Bhagwat Gita in which God is asking his disciple Arjuna to do all his actions / activities for Him only.

"mayi sarvani karmani
sannyasyadhyatma-cetasa
nirasir nirmamo bhutva
yudhyasva vigata-jvarah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Three verse 30)

"Sri Krishna said: Therefore, O Arjuna, surrendering all your works unto Me, with full knowledge of Me, without desires for profit, with no claims to proprietorship, and free from lethargy, fight."

'Ye tu srvani krmani
myi sanyasya mat-para
anany-naiv yogen
maam dhyayant upasate '

'Tesham-aham samud-dharta
mrityu-sansar-saagrat
bhavami na-chirat parth
mayy-avesita-chetsam ' (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter XII verse 6-7 )

"Sri Krishna said: Those people, who worship Me by surrendering all their activities unto Me, are always devoted to Me, always meditate upon Me, Having always fixing their minds upon Me, O Parth - to them, I swiftly rescue from the ocean of birth and death."
Through above verse 6 & 7, God is telling 'Parth' (another name of Arjuna, his disciple), that those people who work for God only & offer all their activities & work to Him only, to such a Soul He shows great mercy, always protects him & finally rescues him during & after death.

"yajnarthat karmano ’nyatra
loko ’yam karma-bandhanah
tad-artham karma kaunteya
mukta-sangah samachara" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Three verse 9)

"Sri Krishna said: Work done as a sacrifice for Vishnu has to be performed, otherwise work causes bondage in this material world. Therefore, O Arjuna, perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain free from bondage."

In the above verses, God is making very clear that if a person offers all his work & activities to God, thinking this world to be a creation of God only, then also He shall be happy with that person & shall protect & shall deliver that person from the cycles of birth & death. By working for God, we shall attain peace & shall attain His love & devotion. So Let's all Work for God only.

O Lord, Let Ignorance Flee Away From Our Life

'Ah, my Beloved, fill the Cup that clears
To-day of past Regrets and future Fears--
To-morrow?--Why, To-morrow I may be
Myself with Yesterday's Sev'n Thousand Years.

'Omar Khayyam'

Above few lines of the Persian Poet, 'Omar Khayyam' can be interpreted in the philosophical sense as:

Oh, my Lord , fill my consciousness with bliss, ecstasy & Your love, so that ignorance flees away from my life. Only Your love can dispel my past regrets & also the fear of future wrongs, whose consequence shall be sorrow & misfortune only. O Lord, I cannot wait until tomorrow to wait for your grace to happen on me, as tomorrow can be like infinite past only, when I died so many times without knowing you. I want you to Fill the Cup of my Life, today only, with your love & devotion. I don't want to die, time & again in future, as I have done in the past. I know you shall come to my rescue & fill my Soul with your Love.

Below are few verses of Bhagwat Gita tell us that God shall dispel all the darkness in our life if we have faith in Him:

"sarva-karmany api sada
kurvano mad-vyapasrayah
mat-prasadad avapnoti
sasvatam padam avyayam" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eighteen verse 56)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, Though engaged in all kinds of activities, My pure devotee, under My protection, reaches the eternal and imperishable abode by My grace."

"cetasa sarva-karmani
mayi sannyasya mat-parah
buddhi-yogam upasritya
mac-cittah satatam bhava" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eighteen verse 57)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, In all activities just depend upon Me and work always under My protection. In such devotional service, be fully conscious of Me."

"mac-cittah sarva-durgani
mat-prasadat tarisyasi
atha cet tvam ahankaran
na srosyasi vinanksyasi" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eighteen verse 58)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, If you become conscious of Me, you will pass over all the obstacles of conditioned life by My grace. If, however, you do not work in such consciousness but act through false ego, not hearing Me, you will be lost."



So let’s have faith in God as He only can dispel all the darkness in our life. When His grace shall happen on us then He shall fill the cup of our life with His love & devotion. By having Devotion in God He shall fill our Souls with His Love.

God Is Always Right, Never Wrong

God is almighty & perfect. All of His actions & his words are also perfect without any impurities. He is the way of all those people who trust in Him. God knows past, present, future & never makes any mistakes.

In our life when something bad happens to us then we think that God is doing something bad for us. Often we complain about our life and negative things that happen to us, forgetting that nothing is random and that everything has a purpose. In this cause & effect world God does everything in our life for our betterment only. Below is a story which illustrates that, whatever, happens in our life, always happens for the Good only.

“In the ancient times in India, there was a king who did not believe in the goodness of God. He had a slave who, in all circumstances, said: My king, do not be discouraged, because God always does that is good for us! Everything God does is perfect, without any mistakes!

One day they went hunting and along the way a wild animal attacked the king. His slave managed to kill the animal, but could not prevent his majesty losing a finger.

Furious and without showing his gratitude for being saved, the nobleman said "Is God good? If He was good, I would not have been attacked and lost my finger."

The slave replied: "My king, despite all these things, I can only tell you that God is good, and He only knows "why" of all these things. Whatever God does is good for us! Everything God does is perfect, without any mistakes! He is never wrong!" Outraged by the response of the slave, the king ordered the arrest of his slave. Later, he left for another hunt and was captured by the wild men who made human sacrifices.

In the altar, ready to sacrifice the king, the savages found that the victim had not one of his fingers, so he was released. According to them, a person without a finger was not so complete to be offered to the gods. Upon his return to the palace, he authorized the release of his slave that he received very affectionately.

"My dear, God was really good to me! I was almost killed by the wild men, but for lack of a single finger, I was let go! But I have a question: if God is so good, why did he allow me to put you in jail?"

"My King, if I had gone with you in this hunt, I would have been sacrificed in place of you, because I have no missing finger. So always remember that, everything God does is good for us! Everything God does is perfect, without any mistakes! He is never wrong."

So always have faith in the God & always think:

"Whatever happened in the past, it happened for the good; Whatever is happening, is happening for the good; Whatever shall happen in the future, shall happen for the good only. Do not weep for the past, do not worry for the future, concentrate on your present life."

He who has faith in God is strong. He who doubts about God is weak. Strong faith in God precedes great actions. Faith illumines the spiritual path, builds a bridge across the gulf of death, and takes one to the other shore of fearlessness and deathlessness. Below verses of Bhagwat Gita on Faith says everything:

"yoginam api sarvesam
mad-gatenantar-atmana
shraddhavan bhajate yo mam
sa me yuktatamo matah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Six verse 47)

"Sri Krishna said to Arjuna: And of all yogis, the one with great Faith who always abides in Me, thinks of Me within himself, and renders transcendental loving service to Me—he is the most intimately united with Me in yoga and is the highest of all. That is My opinion."

"ye tu dharmamritam idam
yathoktam paryupasate
sraddadhana mat-parama
bhaktas te ’tiva me priyah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Twelve verse 20)

"Sri Krishna said to Arjuna: O Arjuna, Those who follow this imperishable path of devotional service and who completely engage themselves with faith, making Me the supreme goal, are very, very dear to Me."

So let’s not doubt about the God & just have Faith in Him. Let’s accept the will of God in all circumstances of life & have faith that whatever, happens in our life, happens for the good only. If you have Faith in God & words of the Lord Krishna, then you shall be able to turn toward the God. It's Faith in God only which determines how you can lead your life in a better way.

Cult of Devotion to Lord Krishna

Lord Krishna is almighty, all powerful & everyone prays to Him but there is a cult of devotion in which a person falls in Love with Lord Krishna & there is a burning desire in that person's mind to meet Lord Krishna. Gopis of Vrindavan, including Sri Radha Rani are of that cult only who fell in Love with Lord Krishna. Meerabai also considered Lord Krishna like that only. Such devotee’s state of mind is the one who always think madly of Lord Krishna. This is the state of the highest devotion to the God, in which a person always yearns to meet Lord Krishna. Gopis & Sri Radha's love for Lord Krishna is so strong that in His absence their mind always yearns for Him.

In "Bhagwat Gita" Lord Krishna is saying to Arjuna:

Be aware of me always,
adore me, make every
act an offering to me,
and you shall come to me;
this I (Krishna) promise,
for you are dear to me. (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eighteen verse 65)

Abandon all supports and
look to me for protection.
I shall purify you from the
sins of the past; do not grieve. (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eighteen verse 66)

Lord Krishna is assuring Arjuna in Bhagwat Gita that He shall always be with him in all circumstances if he is always in devotion to Him. Same thing applies to every human being also. If a person remains devoted to Lord Krishna then Lord promises that He shall deliver that person of all the sins of the past & purify that person. By doing such loving service to the Lord, certainly that person shall be in the eyes of God always & God shall always protect that person.

So let's be devoted to Lord Krishna always. Let's sing His Glories, read literature regarding Him & also do loving service to humanity (charity etc.) in His name.

Just Serve as a medium of God

In one place in Bhagwat Gita, Lord Krishna is telling Arjuna, ”All those great warriors, Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna and the others have already been destroyed by Me (God). Therefore, kill them and do not be disturbed. Simply fight and you will vanquish your enemies in battle.”

We in our life, unnecessarily think that we are the “Doers”, however we are just a medium of God. We are just playing a role in the already scripted play of God. So we should not think that we are the doers but just think that we are the actors on this world stage of God. We are just playing a role in this play of God. In this way all our ego shall vanish & we shall surrender ourselves completely to God.

Below are few verses of Bhagwat Gita which tell that God is all powerful & He has already scripted everything & we just have to play a role in His worldly play:

"sri-bhagavan uvacha
kalo ’smi loka-ksaya-krt pravrddho
lokan samahartum iha pravrttah
rte ’pi tvam na bhavisyanti sarve
ye ’vasthitah pratyanikesu yodhah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eleven verse 32)

"Sri Krishna said to Arjuna: Time I am, the great destroyer of the worlds, and I have come here to destroy all people. With the exception of you [the Pandavas], all the soldiers here on both sides will be slain."

"tasmat tvam uttistha yaso labhasva
jitva satrun bhunksva rajyam samrddham
mayaivaite nihatah purvam eva
nimitta-matram bhava savya-sacin" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eleven verse 33)

"Sri Krishna said to Arjuna: Therefore get up. Prepare to fight and win glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a flourishing kingdom. They are already put to death by My arrangement, and you, O Arjuna is an instrument in the fight."

"dronam cha bhismam cha jayadratham cha
karnam tathanyan api yodha-viran
maya hatams tvam jahi ma vyathistha
yudhyasva jetasi rane sapatnan" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eleven verse 34)

"Sri Krishna said to Arjuna: Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna and the other great warriors have already been destroyed by Me. Therefore, kill them and do not be disturbed. Simply fight, and you will vanquish your enemies in battle."

So let’s shed our ego that we are the doers but just surrender our ego at the feet of God. Let’s Just Serve as a medium of God. By doing so, we shall be doing our duty & also surrendering at the feet of God by acknowledging that we are doing all work for God.

Quotes by Lord Krishna on the Soul

Whole philosophy of Bhagwat Gita is about "Body & Soul" & what is the difference between the two. On the one hand Body is said to be perishable while the Soul is immortal which never dies. Lord Sri Krishna in Bhagwat Gita is only teaching that we should consider ourself, as that immortal Soul & that we all are immortal if we do not think ourselves, as this Body but Soul.

Soul, Spirit, Atman, Self etc. are words which are used to define subtle nature of ourselves which is invisible & mysterious. Soul is something which is within this body & something which can exist without this body. When soul lives in this physical body then it enjoys the different sensory objects through this body. Soul is indestructible & immortal. It moves from one body to the other. As we are not able to see this Soul due to it's subtle nature so it looks mysterious to us.

Now let's understand about the Soul through the Bhagwat Gita. As per Bhagwat Gita both God (Super soul) and the Individual Souls do exist & It also believes in the incarnation of the individual souls, their delusion and bondage to the cycle of births and deaths because of desire ridden actions. As per this, Soul at death gets released from this body, rises to the higher worlds (heaven etc.) or to the lower wombs (animals, birds etc.) & reincarnates or return to the earth to continue its cycle of births and deaths.

Below are Quotes in Bhagwat Gita, which describe the Soul, or Atman, in detail:

"dehino-asmin yatha dehe
kaumaram yauvnam jara
tatha dehantar-praptir-
adhiras tatra na muhyati" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Two verse 13)

"Sri Krishna said: Just as boyhood, youth & old age are attributed to the soul & the embodied soul continuously passes through these cycles, similarly the embodied soul passes into another body at death. The wise man does not get deluded & bewildered with such a change."

"avinasi tu tad viddhi
yena sarvam idam tatam
vinasam avyayasyasya
na kascit kartum arhati" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Two verse 17)

"Sri Krishna said: Know that to be imperishable & indestructible, by which all this is pervaded; for none can bring about the destruction of this indestructible substance, the imperishable soul."

"antavanta ime deha
nityasyoktah saririnah
anasino ’prameyasya
tasmad yudhyasva bharata" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Two verse 18)

"Sri Krishna said: All these bodies pertaining to the indestructible, immeasurable and eternal living entity / soul are spoken of as perishable; therefore, fight, Arjuna."

According to Bhagwat Gita, the Soul, or Atman, neither slays not can it be slain (Chapter 2.19).

"ya enam vetti hantaram
yas chainam manyate hatam
ubhau tau na vijanito
nayam hanti na hanyate" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Two verse 19)

"Sri Krishna said: They are both ignorant, he who knows the soul to be capable of killing and he who takes it as killed; for verily the soul neither kills, nor is killed."

According to Bhagwat Gita, the Soul, or Atman, is never born, never dies and after coming into existence never ceases to be. It is nitya (always), shasvatah (permanent) and purana (very ancient) (Chapter 2.20).

"na jayate mriyate va kadacin
nayam bhutva bhavita va na bhuyah
ajo nityah sasvato ’yam purano
na hanyate hanyamane sarire" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Two verse 20)

"Sri Krishna said: The soul is never born nor dies at any time. Soul has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. Soul is unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval. Soul is not slain when the body is slain."

"vedavinasinam nityam
ya enam ajam avyayam
katham sa purushah Arjuna
kam ghatayati hanti kam" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Two verse 21)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, how can a human being who knows that the soul is indestructible, eternal, unborn and immutable kill anyone or cause anyone to kill?"

According to Bhagwat Gita, the Soul, or Atman, does not suffer & cannot be tainted. At the time of death it does not die, but leaves the body and enters into a new one (Chapter 2.22).

"vasamsi jirnani yatha vihaya
navani grhnati naro ’parani
tatha sarirani vihaya jirnany
anyani samyati navani dehi" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Two verse 22)

"Sri Krishna said: As a human being puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones."

According to Bhagwat Gita, the Soul, or Atman has the properties that Weapons cannot pierce it, fire cannot burn it, water cannot moisten it and wind cannot dry it (Chapter 2.23).

"nainam chindanti shastrani
nainam dahati pavakah
na chainam kledayanty apo
na sosayati marutah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Two verse 23)

"Sri Krishna said: The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind."

According to Bhagwat Gita, the Soul, or Atman, is impenetrable, incombustible, all pervading, stable and immobile (Chapter 2.24).

"acchedyo ’yam adahyo ’yam
akledyo ’sosya eva cha
nityah sarva-gatah sthanur
achalo ’yam sanatanah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Two verse 24)

"Sri Krishna said: This individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble, and can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere, unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same."

According to Bhagwat Gita, the Soul, or Atman, is invisible, imperceptible and immutable (Chapter 2.25).

"avyakto ’yam acintyo ’yam
avikaryo ’yam ucyate
tasmad evam viditvainam
nanusocitum arhasi" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Two verse 25)

"Sri Krishna said: It is said that the soul is invisible, inconceivable and immutable. Knowing this, you should not grieve for the body."

"atha chainam nitya-jatam
nityam va manyase mrtam
tathapi tvam maha-baho
nainam socitum arhasi" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Two verse 26)

"Sri Krishna said: If, however, you think that the soul [or the symptoms of life] is always born and dies forever, you still have no reason to lament, O mighty-armed."

"prakriteh kriyamanani
gunaih karmani sarvasah
ahankara-vimudhatma
kartaham iti manyate" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Three verse 27)

"Sri Krishna said: The spirit soul bewildered by the influence of false ego thinks himself the doer of activities that are in actuality carried out by the three modes of material nature."

Lord Krishna knew the limitations of human consciousness to gauge the true nature of the inner soul. So in the Bhagwat Gita it concurs that no one can exactly know what a soul is. Someone looks at It with great surprise, another speaks about It with great surprise, some another hears about It with incredulity and yet another after hearing about It knows it not (Chapter 2.29).

"ascharya-vat pasyati kascid enam
ascharya-vad vadati tathaiva chanyah
ascharya-vac chainam anyah srnoti
srutvapy enam veda na chaiva kascit" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Two verse 29)

"Sri Krishna said: Some look on the soul as amazing, some describe him as amazing, and some hear of him as amazing, while others, even after hearing about him, cannot understand him at all."

Below verse tells how Soul is superior to matter; mind, senses & intelligence:

"indriyani parany ahur
indriyebhyah param manah
manasas tu para buddhir
yo buddheh paratas tu sah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Three verse 42)

"Sri Krishna said: The working senses are superior to dull matter; mind is higher than the senses; intelligence is still higher than the mind; and he [the soul] is even higher than the intelligence."

So in this way Soul is a Mysterious thing & can be understood if you have faith in God & in religious scriptures.
