Vishvarupa / Virat Rupa / Universal or Cosmic Form of God in Bhagvad Gita

Vishvarupa / Virat Rupa / Universal or Cosmic Form of God is a divine form of God in which all this infinite universe with all the cosmos, planets etc. are shown in the body of one Divine God.

During the Mahabharata war Lord Krishna bestows a special “vision” to Arjuna so that he can see the Divine God in His universal form. In this Cosmic or Universal Form, Lord Krishna shows His opulence's, hundreds of thousands of varied divine and multicolored forms. Lord Krishna shows Arjuna, different manifestations of Adityas, Vasus, Rudras, Asvini-kumaras and all the other demigods. Lord Krishna also shows in His Universal Form many wonderful things which no one has ever seen or heard of before.

Vishvarupa has innumerable forms, eyes, faces, mouths and arms. All creatures of the universe are part of him. He is the infinite universe, without a beginning or an end. He contains peaceful as well as wrathful forms. Unable to bear the scale of the sight and gripped with fear, Arjuna requests Krishna to return to his four-armed Vishnu form, which he can bear to see. Fully encouraged by the teachings and darshan of Krishna in his full form, Arjuna continued the Mahabharata War.

In Chapter - 10 of Bhagwat Gita, Arjuna enquires from Lord Krishna about the various forms through which Lord is pervading in all these worlds in His divine opulence. To this query of Arjuna Lord Krishna replies that, "Of lights He is the radiant sun; of immovable things, He is the Himalayas; among the stars He is the moon; of purifiers He is the wind; of the wielders of weapons He is Lord Rama etc. etc.

Now as per Chapter - 11 of Bhagwat Gita, Arjuna asks Lord Krishna to show him the Cosmic Form of God, the way Lord Krishna just described Himself. So Lord Krishna showed Arjuna the Universal or Cosmic form. Arjuna saw in that Universal Form, unlimited mouths, unlimited eyes, unlimited wonderful visions. The form was decorated with many celestial ornaments and bore many divine upraised weapons. He wore celestial garlands and garments, and many divine scents were smeared over His body. All was wondrous, brilliant, unlimited, all-expanding.

"ihaika-stham jagat krtsnam
pasyadya sa-characharam
mama dehe gudakesha
yac chanyad drastum icchasi"(Bhagwat Gita: ChapterEleven verse 7)

"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, whatever you wish to see, behold at once in this body of Mine! This universal form can show you whatever you now desire to see and whatever you may want to see in the future. Everything—moving and nonmoving—is here completely, in one place."

On seeing such a fierce form of God, Arjuna gets frightened & asks God, “Who are you in this fearful form & what is Your mission in this form?”

To this query of Arjuna "Lord Sri Krishna says: Time I am (Kala), the great destroyer of the worlds, and I have come here to destroy all people. With the exception of you (the Pandavas), all the soldiers here on both sides will be slain."

"If hundreds of thousands of suns were to rise at once into the sky, their radiance might resemble the effulgence of the Supreme Person in that Universal Form."

Arjuna now realizing the might of the Lord apologizes to Lord Krishna, that he has considered Him as his friend & rashly addressed the Lord, “O Krishna,” “O Yadava,” “O my friend,” not knowing His divine glories.

Arjuna asks Lord Sri Krishna to return to his “intimate, beautiful form (saumya-rupa)." At Arjuna's request, Lord Krishna, The Supreme Personality of Godhead, again displays His real four-armed form and at last shows His two-armed form, thus encouraging the fearful Arjuna.

The above said article explains well that we should not talk lightly of God & should show full reverence to God.

Just Serve as a medium of God

In one place in Bhagwat Gita, Lord Krishna is telling Arjuna, ”All those great warriors, Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna and the others have already been destroyed by Me (God). Therefore, kill them and do not be disturbed. Simply fight and you will vanquish your enemies in battle.”

We in our life, unnecessarily think that we are the “Doers”, however we are just a medium of God. We are just playing a role in the already scripted play of God. So we should not think that we are the doers but just think that we are the actors on this world stage of God. We are just playing a role in this play of God. In this way all our ego shall vanish & we shall surrender ourselves completely to God.

Below are few verses of Bhagwat Gita which tell that God is all powerful & He has already scripted everything & we just have to play a role in His worldly play:

"sri-bhagavan uvacha
kalo ’smi loka-ksaya-krt pravrddho
lokan samahartum iha pravrttah
rte ’pi tvam na bhavisyanti sarve
ye ’vasthitah pratyanikesu yodhah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eleven verse 32)

"Sri Krishna said to Arjuna: Time I am, the great destroyer of the worlds, and I have come here to destroy all people. With the exception of you [the Pandavas], all the soldiers here on both sides will be slain."

"tasmat tvam uttistha yaso labhasva
jitva satrun bhunksva rajyam samrddham
mayaivaite nihatah purvam eva
nimitta-matram bhava savya-sacin" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eleven verse 33)

"Sri Krishna said to Arjuna: Therefore get up. Prepare to fight and win glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a flourishing kingdom. They are already put to death by My arrangement, and you, O Arjuna is an instrument in the fight."

"dronam cha bhismam cha jayadratham cha
karnam tathanyan api yodha-viran
maya hatams tvam jahi ma vyathistha
yudhyasva jetasi rane sapatnan" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eleven verse 34)

"Sri Krishna said to Arjuna: Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna and the other great warriors have already been destroyed by Me. Therefore, kill them and do not be disturbed. Simply fight, and you will vanquish your enemies in battle."

So let’s shed our ego that we are the doers but just surrender our ego at the feet of God. Let’s Just Serve as a medium of God. By doing so, we shall be doing our duty & also surrendering at the feet of God by acknowledging that we are doing all work for God.

Nothing is Yours

Once there was a rich man named "Richie". He was so rich that he had a big walled house. In that house there were big gardens in which all types of fruit laden trees were there. It was having it's own golf course inside the walled house premises. There was an area in which 12 number of cars were parked. Among these cars, 3 cars were of vintage era. Remaining 9 were of modern era, used by two of his young sons & by his one teen daughter. His wife too was a simple homely lady caring for all the family members. Sons were fond of horses too, so they had a stud farm nearby their car parking within the walled house only.

This walled covering of the house was having 4 entrance gates - each in one direction, east, west, north & south. All the gates were manned by 3 security guards, 3 each on one gate. In this vast area they had a palatial palace like living area in which there were 18 big rooms in which whole family used to live happily. There were servant quarters in which 21servants used to live, in which were cooks, drivers & others who used to look after this family.

"Richie" was very happy with his family as all his children were very loving & used to care about him very much. So was his wife, simple, caring & devoted to her family. "Richie" was enjoying the bliss of life, rather happy family life.

One day "Richie" was roaming alone in one of his garden & there was nobody other than him over there. Yes, there were birds chirping in the garden & it was giving a pleasant sound to his ears. He was enjoying the casual stroll in the garden, just by himself. Just while when he was staring at a beautiful small bird on the branch of a palm tree, he was stunned to see a dark bluish-black person of heavy built in front of him. He was wearing strange type of clothing & was fully laden with gold ornaments. He had a golden heavy crown too on his forehead. "Richie" was really filled with fear seeing that person in his garden. He was wondering how come this dark bluish-black person came inside his house when there were so many guards keeping vigil of the whole area at the entrance gates. At last "Richie" came to his natural self & asked that person.

"Richie" : Who are you?

The stranger replied, I am "Kaal".

"Richie" : Who "Kaal"? This is a strange name, I have never heard of this name.

"Kaal" : Meaning of my name is "Time". Kaal & Time are one & the same thing. People call me Time also.

"Richie" : "Kaal", "Time"................ I am not able to understand anything. How come you are able to enter my house? Who allowed you to enter inside my house?

"Kaal" : Your house!!!!!!!........."Kaal" laughs..........who said it's your house!!!!!!!!!!

"Richie" : Yes, of course, this is my house. This whole vast property is registered in my name, you can check with local city office too............all this property is mine, I am the owner of whole of this property.

"Kaal" : Ha, ha ha.................it is really amusing that you say that all this belongs to you. In fact, it does not belong to you.

"Richie" : What the hell are you talking?

"Kaal" : Yes, I am telling you the truth............this property & all these cars etc. are not yours.

"Richie" : This time you have really become mad that you are talking this nonsense to me.

(Richie calls his wife, sons & daughter.......all come nearby him & all are frightened to see this dark bluish-black person inside their premises)

"Richie" to "Kaal" : See, here are my sons, daughter & my wife. All are witness to that I am the owner of this vast property.

"Kaal......Again laughing..............Ha, ha ha.......these people are not your sons, daughter & your wife.........so how come they become witness to that you are the owner of this vast property.

"Richie" : This time you have really, really become mad.

**A great argument ensues between the two & Richie becomes too angry & calls his security guards. No one seems to be responding to his calls. Richie's voice gets louder & louder but no one among his guards seems to be responding. His face becomes too red with anger, he is shouting & screaming. During all this, he gets a severe pain in his heart & fells down on the ground. All his sons, daughter & wife rush to him but........it's unfortunate.........he is not breathing, his pulse has stopped & he is lying dead on the floor.

Richie's soul has left the body & is standing just near his body. "Kaal / Time" is still there in the garden. "Kaal" has all the powers to talk to the souls as He is the "Almighty Time", God himself.

"Kaal to Richie's soul" : Yes, "Richie", now tell me, who are you?

"Richie's soul" : How come have I come out of this body & why this body of mine is lying on the floor?

"Kaal" : You are dead & you have left this body, that's why you are seeing yourself as separate than this body.

"Richie's soul" : I am not able to touch my near & dear one's, not able to talk to them anymore.

"Kaal" : Yes, once dead, you can't do all this, as all these activities can be done with your physical body only & that is dead now. Now all these relations ceases for you. All this ownership of property was only while you were in that physical body, in which everyone used to recognize you. Living human beings cannot see the souls. For them you are dead & does not exist anymore. Now tell me, are you still owner of all this vast property.

"Richie's soul" : No, now when I do not belong to this physical form & physical world, how can all this be mine. When I can't communicate with anyone in this physical world, then how can I own anything of this world. Man falsely believes while living in his physical body that all this property etc. is his own.

"Kaal" : What about your sons, daughter & wife? Do you still feel the same about them?

"Richie's soul" : Yes, my love for them is same, but as I am not able to communicate with them, I am feeling different. I am also seeing that they have considered my body to be myself & as my body is lying dead on the floor, so they are feeling that I am really dead. Yes, all relatives are yours only once you are in the physical body. At the death of the physical body they too believe that their relative is dead & so dead is their relation with him.

Kaal" : Yes, you are absolutely right, Nothing of this World is Yours, neither property, nor relatives. All these seem to be yours, only once you are in this physical body. Once you (human soul) leave this physical body...................."Nothing is Yours".

***ABOUT KAAL: As per Bhagwat Gita, God declares in "Chapter Eleven verse 32" that He himself is Kaal (Time), the destroyer of the world. Purpose of Kaal (Time) is to destroy all people except his devotees. Below is Verse 32 of Chapter Eleven of "Bhagwat Gita" explaining "Kaal" :

"sri-bhagavan uvacha:
kalo ’asmi loka-ksaya-krt pravrddho
lokan samahartum iha pravrttah
rte ’pi tvam na bhavisyanti sarve
ye ’vasthitah pratyanikesu yodhah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eleven verse 32)

"Sri Krishna said: I am the inflamed Kaal (Time), the great destroyer of the worlds. My purpose here is to destroy all these people. With the exception of you [the Pandavas - his devotees], all the soldiers here on both sides will be slain."
