Greatness of Chapter One of Bhagwat Gita

Bhagwat Gita is a very Pious Book. Reading to it is considered a great Pious Karma & all the sinful results of Past Lives & this life are destroyed if one reads to the Bhagwat Gita regularly. Even if one recites to a single verse of it, one attains great virtue due to that, what to talk of reading full chapters of it. Here it is discussed about Chapter one of Bhagwat Gita & the virtues related to reading this first chapter. Here below is a Story which describes the Greatness of reading or Listening to the Chapter one of Bhagwat Gita.

“In the olden days in India, there was a man named Susharma, who was born in a pious Brahmin family. When Susharma grew up he went into bad company & started doing sinful acts, He became a person full of wickedness & a man devoid of piety. He used to feel a pleasure while hurting others. For his livelihood he used to collect the dry leaves from a garden & used to sew these together to make plates and cups. One day Susharma entered the garden of a very pious sage to collect leaves, and a snake slithered in and killed him. Because of all his sins, he was cast into many hells and suffered there for quite a long-time.

Later on, he received the body of a bull. As a bull, he was purchased by a very crippled peasant and for many years he had to carry heavy loads. One day, when the bull was carrying very heavy load on his back, he fell unconscious. Bystanders felt very sorry for the bull and bestowed upon him some results of their pious acts. One prostitute was also standing there but she doubted if she had ever performed any pious acts which she could offer to the dying bull. So he just made a prayer in her mind & offered all the pious credits that she might have earned accidently in her life to the bull.

After the bull died and entered the abode of Yamaraja (Lord of death), the god of death, Yamaraja, informed him, “Now you are freed from the reactions to all your previous sinful deeds because a prostitute gave you her pious credits.”

In his next life Susharma again took birth as an elevated pious Brahmin, but this time he could remember his past lives. He decided to find the prostitute who had caused his liberation from hell in last birth. When he found her, he asked her what pious acts she had performed. The prostitute replied him that her pet parrot had daily recited verses from Bhagwat Gita that had completely purified her heart.

Thereafter the Parrot told them about the recitation of the verses of Bhagwat Gita. Parrot told them that in the previous life the parrot had been a proud and envious, yet very learned Brahmin who had insulted other learned persons. Due to his Insult of Learned people, he had now, therefore, received the body of a parrot. But as a parrot he had often heard certain sages reciting the First chapter of the Bhagavat-Gita, and he had also begun reciting it. So he had become purified due to that. After being sold to the prostitute, the parrot continued his recitations of Bhagavat-Gita and thus earned the prostitute pious credits.

Susharma eventually became completely pure, and within a short time he attained to the poise Planet of Lord, Vaikuntha, the supreme destination.”

On the Battle field of Kurukshetra, when Arjuna, the disciple of Lord Krishna got infatuated & forgot his duty to fight, then Lord Krishna reminded Arjuna of his duty to fight a lawful, justful war & gave him the teachings of Bhagwat Gita. Arjuna after having been taught in the path of knowledge by Lord Krishna came back to his path of duty & fought a lawful battle against the Kauravas (his enemies) & won the battle with the grace of Lord Krishna.

Bhagwat Gita: Chapter One (1) is entitled "The Yoga of Dejection of Arjuna." This Chapter One has a total of 46 verses.

Verses 1 to 11 are about the Description of the Principal warriors on both sides (Kauravas & Pandavas) with their fighting qualities.

Verses 12 to 19 are about the Blowing of conches by the warriors on both the sides.

Verses 20 to 27 are about; when the Arjuna observes the warriors drawn up for the battle.

Verses 28 to 46 are about; when the Arjuna is overwhelmed by the Infatuation & when Arjuna gives expression to his faint-heartedness, tenderness & grief.

One Supreme God

Once a rich man employed a new servant in his house. Servant’s duties included everything of the house, as well as, gardening of the beautiful lawns, trees etc. in the house. On the first day, in the early morning in the house, owner asked the servant to do watering of all the plants in the garden. Poor servant had never done jobs in gardening, so he took a long plastic tube & started putting water on the leaves of all the trees in the garden. He went on putting water on each & every leaf of each tree & doing so the water tank in the house got empty.

Seeing no water coming in the taps of the house, the owner of the house enquired about, what was the matter. Suddenly owner realized that new servant has wasted all water in the garden. He immediately came to the garden & enquired from the servant, “why he was putting water on the leaves of each plant?” The ignorant servant said that he was obeying his master’s instructions only to water the plant. The owner got angry & told him that he has asked him to water the roots of each plant & not to put water on each & every leaf of each plant. The poor servant did not knew that by putting water in the roots only, each branch, each leaf of the tree is nourished & not by putting water on the leaves of the plant!!!!!!

In our understanding of God, we also do such mistakes that we start watering the leaves instead of the roots. God is one supreme & that God has created all this creation of humans, demigods etc. In this world, there are many demigods but we should worship the One who has created all these demigods. We should know that “One Supreme God” & worship Him. That One God is the root of this world tree. If we shall worship the root cause of this world, we shall automatically worship all other demigods.”

In Bhagwat Gita Lord Krishna tells us, how by worshipping the One Supreme God, one can worship all other demigods.

"yo yo yam yam tanum bhaktah
shraddhayarcitum icchati
tasya tasyachalam shraddham
tam eva vidadhamy aham" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Seven verse 21)

"Sri Krishna says to Arjuna: I am in everyone’s heart as the Super soul. As soon as one desires to worship some demigod, I make his faith steady so that he can devote himself to that particular demigod (deity)."

"sa taya shraddhaya yuktas
tasyaradhanam ihate
labhate cha tatah kaman
mayaiva vihitan hi tan" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Seven verse 22)

"Sri Krishna says to Arjuna: Endowed with such a faith, he endeavors to worship a particular demigod and obtains his desires. But in actuality these benefits are bestowed by Me alone."

"antavat tu phalam tesam
tad bhavaty alpa-medhasam
devan deva-yajo yanti
mad-bhakta yanti mam api" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Seven verse 23)

"Sri Krishna said: Men of small intelligence worship the demigods, and their fruits are limited and temporary. Those who worship the demigods go to the planets of the demigods, but My devotees ultimately reach My Supreme planet."

"sarva-dharman parityajya
mam ekam saranam vraja
aham tvam sarva-papebhyo
mokshayisyami ma suchah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Eighteen verse 66)

"Sri Krishna says to Arjuna: "Abandon all supports (of other demigods) and look to me for protection. I shall purify you from the sins of the past; you do not grieve."

"ye tu dharmamritam idam
yathoktam paryupasate
sraddadhana mat-parama
bhaktas te ’tiva me priyah" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Twelve verse 20)

"Sri Krishna says to Arjuna: Those who follow this imperishable path of devotional service of Me and who completely engage themselves with faith, making Me the supreme goal, are very, very dear to Me."

In Bhagwat Gita Chapter Ten, Lord Krishna is saying that he is the source of all beings & gods. Not even that as per Lord Krishna, all these universes & creations spring from but a spark of His splendor only. As per Him, He is seated in hearts of all living entities. He Himself is Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva & Lord Brahma. He Himself is Sun, Moon, Wind & Fire. He Himself is Rama God too. He Himself is Lord of wealth - Kubera. He Himself is Spiritual word Om. He Himself is river Ganges. Among women He Himself is manifested as Goddess of fortune (Lakshmi), Goddess of wisdom (Saraswati) & other Goddesses of fame, memory, intelligence, steadfastness and patience. As per Lord Krishna His opulence is limitless.

So let’s know that one One Supreme God from whom all other Gods, demigods have evolved. Let’s worship & devote ourself to that supreme deity only as by watering the roots (doing worship to the Supreme Lord), all the leaves shall automatically be watered (all other Gods & demigods shall automatically be worshipped).

God is One

There are said to be 330,000,000 or 330 Million (33 Crore) Gods & Goddesses in Hinduism. To me the only explanation for such a huge numbers may be like that all the residents of some "Godly Planet" are called Gods or Goddesses. In other words 330 Million (33 Crore) is the population of that "Godly Planet" on which all these Godly people live. Anyway, on this our own earth, people follow different religions & have different faiths in regard to God. Different religions of the world depict God in different forms. In Hinduism God is depicted as Rama, Krishna, Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, Durga, Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati etc. while in some sects of Hinduism, God is depicted as formless God too. In Christianity God is depicted as Jesus Christ who is said to be the Son of God. Sikhism & Muslim sects mostly believe in a formless God. So different minded people of the world see the God in different forms or formless God too.

In reality "God is One" who but appears in different forms. All these Gods & Goddesses are manifestation of one Supreme God only. It can be understood very easily like this:

"There is a potter who makes different forms of Gods & Goddesses from clay of the ground. Clay is basically the same in all the forms but out of same clay different Gods & Goddesses appear to us. In the same way there is only One God but it appears in different forms. Similarly if you see that Gold for making different ornaments is same but with this gold various types, shapes of ornaments are made & are given different names. Similarly God is One but He is worshipped in different cultures, countries in different ways, forms & with different names. There are different paths in this world to reach that same One God."

In Bhagwat Gita Chapter Ten, Lord Krishna is himself saying that He is the source of all beings & gods. Not even that, as per Lord Krishna, all these universes & creations spring from but a spark of His splendor only. As per Him, He is seated in the hearts of all living entities.

Hindus likewise believe in only one God. They glorify and praise His thousands of qualities. For example when God is love, He is symbolically represented by Lord Krishna, God as virtue is represented by lord Rama, God as power is represented by Lord Hanuman, God as wisdom is represented by Goddess Saraswati etc. etc. So these different aspects of Gods represent spirituality, purity, power etc. of the Ultimate One who is endless truth and bliss.

If there are many "Pots filled with water" & if these pots are put under the Sun then Reflection of the Sun can be seen in all these pots. It appears that individual Sun is appearing in each pot. Not only that, water of each pot gets heated equally when Sun is reflected in the water pots. Now just as the Sun may be reflected in numerous pots of water, so the same one God is reflected in everything. Similarly there is one True Universal Self or One God who is appearing in different forms.

Below are some verses from Bhagwat Gita which explain about the Oneness of Supreme God:

"yac chapi sarva-bhutanam
bijam tad aham arjuna
na tad asti vina yat syan
maya bhutam characharam" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Ten verse 39)
"Sri Krishna said: O Arjuna, I am the generating seed of all existences. There is no being—moving or nonmoving—that can exist without Me."
"aham atma gudakesha
sarva-bhutasaya-sthitah
aham adis cha madhyam cha
bhutanam anta eva cha" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Ten verse 20)

"Sri Krishna said: I am the Super Soul, O Arjuna, seated in the hearts of all living entities. I am the beginning, the middle and the end of all beings."

"yad yad vibhutimat sattvam
srimad urjitam eva va
tat tad evavagaccha tvam
mama tejo-’msa-sambhavam" (Bhagwat Gita: Chapter Ten verse 41)
"Sri Krishna said: Know that all opulent, beautiful and glorious creations spring from but a spark of My splendor."
So let's see one God in all different forms. Let people not fight on the basis of religion. There is only one God & He is called by different names by his lovers, devotees in affection. Sri Ram, Sri Krishn, Gobind, Waheguru, Allah, Jesus are all the same. So let's all have wisdom to respect each others faith & let's all realize that One God in all the different forms.

Jai Shri Krishna
